Lift coffee table: Walnut, 18″h x 22″d x 50″w. $3500.
The Lift coffee table was a recently executed custom commission. My client gave me the overall dimensions and the instructions to incorporate a lift-top mechanism into the design.
Truly a “form follows function” design excorcise, the mechanism I purchased allowed for a main storage space as well as two smaller compartments for remotes etc., under the top. With the dimensions of the storage space predetermined, I chose to emphasize and complement its mass by adding the four wide, slightly tapered legs– setting them back from each corner and notching them to accept the compartment “box”. This gave a sculptural feel to the piece and showed off the continuous walnut grain wrapping around the sides of the mitered box.
The top lifts to a height of just under 30″ and about a foot towards one’s seat at the couch for dining or more convenient laptop use etc. There are several of these mechanisms available at different sizes. This one works quite smoothly; I am able to lift the top with one hand and it creates much useful storage.
