Organic Round

Organic Round Dining Table: poplar, maple and pigmented varnish, 30″h x 36″w.

My Organic Round Dining Table was first created in walnut with a 40″ top, pictured towards the bottom of this page. A subsequent walnut version was ordered in a smaller 36″ size, pictured just below this painted version. To aid in the process of scaling down the elements of the base to the smaller size, I created this painted base in poplar as a prototype. After creating the walnut version for my client, I proceeded to finish up this prototype by adding a solid maple top and finishing the whole piece in a durable, sprayed conversion varnish. The color is matched to Sherwin Williams “Black Magic”. It is presently on display in my showroom at a discounted price.

This version was the final result of refinements made based on the prototype above. In addition to being constructed of carefully matched solid walnut there are slight variations in size, shape and positioning of elements of the base. This is the version you would receive if you commissioned this table. The detail images below show the “haunched” mortise and tenon joinery visible where the feet and upper supports connect to the central, upright post. All components have a slight taper — the feet as they reach outward and the uprights as they extend upwards.  This piece is finished with a hand-rubbed hard wax oil. This Round Dining Table has a very unique, sculpted base. Most joinery is “haunched”, meaning each leg or support fits into a corresponding notch or recess in the piece it is attached to . You can see this visible connection in the detail images. When combined with the concealed mortise and tenon joinery, these connections give the base strength, both visual and actual. All components are tapered, lending additional fluidity and elegance to the piece.

This table, as pictured, has a 40″ top, but could well support a much larger top. It could also be made in a variety of woods. Please contact me to discuss.
