Artifact #2: 15″w x 24″h x 1.25″d, Ebonized mahogany

Artifact #2 is cut and hand-carved from a single piece of solid mahogany. The lower portion is textured by hand with a v-gouge. It is then ebonized (blackened) with a dye and burnished to let some of the mahogany show through selectively. Its finished with oil and wax.

This is a shape that I found myself sketching this past winter (2021). I put it in the category of other “African” -like forms that I find my imagination conjuring up. My grandfather spent a lot of time teaching in Kenya while with the Friend’s Service Committee. As a result, many small sculptures and various African art pieces and textiles were in my childhood home. Years later I find that those objects still have an influence on me and my designs.
