Sawtooth coffee table: Maple veneer, birch plywood, pigmented conversion varnish; 18h x 22″d x 40.5″w. $4400.
I built this table just before my recent show at the 2019 Smithsonian Craft show as a speculative piece. The bold -shaped form had been catching my eye as a drawing in my sketchbook for some time and I decided it would provide an exciting element in my booth…and eventually an elegant addition to someone’s home.
The structure of the Sawtooth is comprised of a baltic birch hardwood plywood frame. The form is then entirely veneered with a full 1/16″ thick maple veneer — not an easy task as the large form had to be entirely inserted into my vacuum press.
After much meticulous sanding and detailing, the table is sprayed with coats of pigmented conversion varnish, an extra hard, two part, lacquer – like product. The chartreuse color is actually matched to Sherwin Williams’ “lively yellow”. After this pigmented conversion varnish, the Sawtooth is sprayed with a final protective clear coat.
This table is available and ready to be shipped or delivered to its lucky new home. If a slightly different size or a different color is desired, please contact me to discuss recreating a new version.
