This Spalted Maple Desk was created for a client out of wood harvested here, locally in Maine. I obtained a slab for the headboard of a bed for this particular client and was also able to get a couple more from the same tree for the desk. I sawed up some of the more interesting wood, in terms of grain pattern, into thick veneer which I glued onto laminated hardwood plywood for the case. I used the darker heartwood for the base.
Spalted maple is maple – in this case hard maple- that gets infected by a fungus that creates the colors and the fine black “borderlines” that you see in the above detail shots. If harvested in time, the wood is still hard and intact, but has the beautiful colors and patterns that you see.
I made the top of the desk detachable from the base by way of wedges. You see these in the detail shots above. Like the aforementioned bed, the desk needed to get up a windy, tight staircase in its new Boston brownstone. The wedges made a nice and useful detail for both the bed and desk.
This desk could be re-created in a variety of other woods, finishes and sizes. Please contact me to discuss.
